Trusting Yourself, Taking Up Space, and Leading from Full Capacity

March 18, 2026 807

Some leaders are shaped by ambition.
Others are shaped by survival — and learn how to transform pain into purpose.

Shanise Pearce is the embodiment of resilience, courage, and intentional leadership. A vice president in banking, health equity advocate, public speaker, and triple-negative breast cancer survivor, Shanise uses her voice to champion awareness, representation, and humanity in the workplace.

For Tiffany Odutoye, this conversation is deeply powerful. Shanise’s story is not only about professional rise — it’s about what it takes to keep going when life demands everything from you, and how leadership begins with honoring your own capacity.

Listening to Shanise feels like being reminded that strength doesn’t mean pushing through endlessly — it means knowing when to pause, speak up, and choose yourself.

Turning Pain into Purpose

Shanise’s advocacy work began with a diagnosis that changed everything.

After discovering she carried genetic mutations that placed her at high risk for multiple cancers, Shanise proactively sought specialized medical care — a decision that ultimately saved her life. Early testing allowed her cancer to be detected and treated at its earliest stages.

But her experience also revealed something harder to ignore: disparities in representation, access, and care — especially for Black women. Even while undergoing treatment, Shanise remained observant and outspoken, questioning why diversity was missing in spaces meant to heal.

Her advocacy grew naturally from that awareness. Today, she serves on boards, leads initiatives, and represents communities that too often go unseen — turning survival into service.

Leadership That Begins Before the Title

Shanise is clear about one thing: leadership is not limited by title.

Her own rise began early — from administrative roles to executive leadership — because she refused to stay confined by job descriptions. She volunteered, asked questions, joined councils, built employee resource groups, and raised her hand consistently.

Mentorship helped her grow. Sponsorship helped her move. Ownership helped her rise.

Her story is a powerful reminder that careers are built through relationships, initiative, and courage — not waiting for permission.

Trust, Capacity, and Self-Care

One of Shanise’s most resonant themes is capacity — and the cost of ignoring it.

She speaks honestly about how years of pouring from an empty cup created anxiety she didn’t initially recognize — anxiety that quietly transferred to her children. Leadership, she explains, required learning that self-care is not indulgence; it’s responsibility.

Trusting the process also means trusting yourself enough to rest, to step into discomfort, and to say yes to growth — without abandoning your well-being.

Advice to Her 25-Year-Old Self

When asked what she would tell her younger self, Shanise offers wisdom shaped by experience and grace:

“Trust the process. Trust your instincts.
Don’t be afraid to take up space.
Say yes to opportunities that stretch you.
Don’t let fear of the unknown keep you from stepping into leadership.
And most importantly — take care of yourself.”

It’s advice rooted in resilience — and permission to lead without self-erasure.

Her SheRo: Her Grandmother

Shanise’s greatest inspiration comes from her grandmother — a woman whose strength, wisdom, and perseverance shaped her foundation. Watching her navigate life with resolve and grace taught Shanise what leadership looks like long before she ever held a title.

Book Recommendation

Capacity — Dr. Lisa Wicker

A book Shanise deeply recommends, Capacity explores how leaders can recognize limits, manage stress, and prevent burnout — offering tools to lead with intention rather than depletion.
